The Bell Family

Ormrod Family

Richard Ormrod was born about 1819 in Tatham, Lancashire (1851 census). This is farming country in the north of Lancashire close to the Westmorland border. In the 1881 census his birth place is stated as Wray, (close to) Tatham.

He married Ann Pilling at Giggleswick Parish Church in 1845, about 20 miles away from his home at ‘Eskrigg in the parish of Gressingham’.

There are references to Orm(e)rods in Tatham in the 1700’s on the LDS website, but there is a gap in the records. There are so few Orm(e)rods in the area that Richard is probably related. An area for further study.

In the 1851 census he was married to Ann, had 3 children, and was a Farm Manager at Camsgill, Preston Patrick, Westmorland. Camsgill is famous for its links with the Quakers,  Thomas CAMM one of the founders of the Quaker movement in this country, owned and lived at Camsgill.

Richard and Ann had 9 children:

John—not married?

Eleanor—married WEBSTER(3 children) and COTTAM(6 children)

Richard—married BENSON (9 children) my Great Grandfather

Sarah Jane—married HOGGARTH (4 children)

George and Thomas twins died as babies

Isabella Agnes—married Henry Cottam HODGSON

William Garnet—married PARKINSON (7 children)

Elizabeth Ann—married DAVIS (2 children) and WITHERS (? Children)

By the 1881 census Richard(b.1819) was living with his wife and unmarried son at Low Foulshaw Farm. His daughters husband Alexander Webster died there in 1874, so presumably he took over the farm at that time. On the 1891 census his son William Garnet Ormrod and his family were living at the farm and Ann was a widow.

Richards son (also Richard) is my Great grandfather, he was born in 1851, christened in Preston Patrick and on the 1881 census is farming at Arkenthwaite, Heversham with Milnthorpe, not far from Preston Patrick and Low Foulshaw. In 1890 he married Mary Jane BENSON and can be found on the on the 1901 census with the first 5 of their 9 children at Sunbrick, Aldingham, Lancashire.

The family moved to Millbrook, Stalybridge before World War 1
